MetLife Stadium hints that Elton John will perform there

E presumably stands for Elton in this MetLife Stadium photo, which appeared on Facebook June 23.

A June 22 Facebook post by MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford included the sentence “Big concert announcement tomorrow” and the photo to the right.

You will notice three big E’s in the photo. If you then look at John’s Facebook page, you will find the same E with a star in place of its middle horizontal line (see other photo at right) and the news that John is planning to make a “major tour announcement” on June 23.

You don’t have to be Columbo to figure this one out, folks.

(UPDATE: The MetLife Stadium show is now confirmed; for more info, click here.)

John presumably will be announcing a new (and possibly final) leg of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which started in September 2018; has already stopped in New Jersey once (in March 2019, at the Prudential Center in Newark); and will be back at the Prudential Center for a show on Feb. 25, 2022 (rescheduled from April 15, 2020).

Again, E is for Elton.

The tour, paused since March 2020, is currently scheduled to resume Sept. 2021 in Europe and remain in that continent until December 2021, then be in the United States from January to April 2022, with no more shows scheduled until January 2023 in New Zealand. So a MetLife Stadium show or shows would seem to be possible for either the summer of 2021, 2022, or — who knows — even 2023.

Announcing the tour in 2018, John said that it would be his last, and that it would take about three years. He is now 74 years old.

John has never performed at MetLife Stadium, though he did present five shows with Billy Joel at Giants Stadium in 1994. Giants Stadium closed in January 2010 and was demolished later that year. MetLife Stadium was built near it in the Meadowlands Sports Complex and opened in April 2010.

According to Billboard magazine, the first 179 shows of the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour grossed $358.6 million.
