Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms to sing with surviving Smithereens again

by JAY LUSTIG

The Smithereens, featuring Robin Wilson of the Gin Blossoms, will open for Dave Davies in Illinois, April 19.

Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms — who did a great job singing with surviving members of The Smithereens at a Jan. 13 tribute to the band’s late frontman, Pat DiNizio, at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank — will do so again, April 19 at the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, Ill. Billed as “The Smithereens,” they will open for Dave Davies of The Kinks that night, whose band features Smithereens drummer Dennis Diken.

“I am again excited and proud to assume lead vocal duties with one of my favorite bands The Smithereens! Hopefully I’ll do some more shows with them later this year. Rock Away. RW,” Wilson wrote in a Tweet, tonight, from Gin Blossoms’ official Twitter account.

Wilson sang four songs — more than any other guest artist — with Diken, guitarist Jim Babjak and bassist Mike Mesaros on Jan. 13: “Blood and Roses,” “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” “Blues Before and After” and “Green Thoughts.” Below is a video of their “Blood and Roses.”

Davies performed at that show as well.

I will update this post if more information becomes available on any other Wilson/Smithereens shows.

Davies will also perform at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair, April 7, but a different opening act, Chris Collingwood of Fountains of Wayne, has already been announced for that show.
