Sandra Bernhard describes her show “Sandemonium,” which she will present at House of Independents in Asbury Park at 8 and 10:30 p.m. July 6, as an opportunity to escape from the chaos of the modern world.
“My approach to it all is to address the obvious by not addressing it,” the comedian, actress and singer recently told phillyvoice.com. “My new show is like going to a party after spending the day being haunted by the news.
“Everybody is burned out, blown out and terrified. You keep thinking that something is going to bring this whole sick situation to a screeching halt, but so far, that hasn’t happened. So, just come and enjoy.”
Bernhard — who currently hosts her own show “Sandyland” on SiriusXM satellite radio’s Radio Andy (102) channel, helmed by Andy Cohen — will mix music with her irreverent, pop culture-obsessed comedy at this show, bringing along her Sandyland Squad Band.
Reviewing her Dec. 29 Sandemonium show at Joe’s Pub in New York, Tony Frisby of BroadwayWorld.com wrote that “she never bailed on her promise to remain upbeat. Keeping the show lively without abandoning who she is and being honest about the state of the world without wallowing it in was something of a high-wire act. Bernhard mostly kept the proceedings on point, demonstrating that, at its core, SANDEMONIUM, not unlike the most successful New Year’s resolutions, was all about baby steps.”
