Shakira will receive Video Vanguard Award and perform at VMAs in Newark

Shakira will receive the honorary Video Vanguard Award and perform at MTV’s Video Music Awards show at the Prudential Center in Newark, Sept. 12. This marks the first time the annual award has been given to a South American artist; Shakira hails from Colombia.

Previous Video Vanguard Award recipients include Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Missy Elliott. The award, which is officially known as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, is a lifetime achievement award that honors “outstanding contributions” and “profound impact” on music video and popular culture.

Confirmed performers for the Sept. 12 show include Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin and Stray Kids, with many more expected to be announced soon.

Taylor Swift has the most nominations, eight, followed by SZA, with six; Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith, with five each; and Blackpink, Diddy and Shakira, with four each.
