Carnegie Hall will host a Patti Smith tribute concert, March 26.

Bruce Springsteen — who co-wrote Patti Smith’s biggest hit single, “Because the Night” — has been added to the lineup of the sold-out, March 26 “People Have the Power: A Celebration of Patti Smith” concert taking place at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Other participants will include Michael Stipe, Chrissie Hynde, Ben Harper, Courtney Barnett, Susanna Hoffs, Jesse Malin, Karen O, Sharon Van Etten, The Kronos Quartet, Glen Hansard, Paul Banks of Interpol, Matt Berninger of The National, Body/Head (Kim Gordon & Bill Nace), Allison Mosshart of The Kills, Angel Olsen, Michael Shannon, Jim Jarmusch, Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn.

The show’s house band will feature bassist Tony Shanahan (of Patti Smith’s band), bassist Flea (of The Red Hot Chili Peppers), keyboardist Benmont Tench (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), drummer Steve Jordan (of The Rolling Stones), and guitarist Charlie Sexton.

The Carnegie Hall show is the latest in a series of tribute/benefit concerts presented by Michael Dorf of City Winery. Past editions have honored Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, The Who, David Bowie and others. While Smith is not confirmed to participate on March 26, she has performed at some of the past shows in the series, so her presence would not exactly be a surprise.

The series’ last tribute — honoring the songs of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young — took place on May 13, 2024, and featured Shawn Colvin, Steve Earle, Iron & Wine, Guster, Rickie Lee Jones, Grace Potter, Todd Rundgren and others, with Graham Nash performing, as well.

Over the past 20 years, approximately $2 million has been raised in the series, for music education.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Smith’s landmark debut album, Horses.
