Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band paid tribute to the late Shane MacGowan, frontman of The Pogues, by opening their May 12 concert at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny, Ireland, with a cover of MacGowan’s majestic “A Rainy Night in Soho.” You can watch a video of it, below.
The song was originally released on The Pogues’ 1986 EP, Poguetry in Motion. MacGowan died in November, at 65.
“with the exception of Bob Dylan and Chuck Berry — I’m not sure about the rest of us — but I know we’ll be singing Shane MacGowan songs 100 years from now,” Springsteen said in May 2020 when he played “A Rainy Night in Soho” on his SiriusXM satellite radio DJ show, “From My Home to Yours.”
Also at this show … in an unusual touch, Springsteen performed a solo acoustic song, “This Hard Land,” about two hours before the start of the show, as a treat for early arrivers. You can watch this number below, too.
Other notable numbers included “If I Was the Priest,” “Racing in the Street,” and an early-in-the-show Darkness on the Edge of Town triple-header of “Candy’s Room,” “Adam Raised a Cain” and “Prove It All Night.”
