At the American Music Honors awards show at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, April 15, Bruce Springsteen was not able to attend, as planned, because he was diagnosed with COVID. But he did appear via video, giving the induction speeches for honorees Steven Van Zandt and Darlene Love. He posted the videos of both speeches to YouTube today, and you can watch them below.
I was there and have already posted all the details about the event HERE.
Sam Moore and Steve Earle also were honored at the event, which raised money for the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music at Monmouth University. Garry Tallent inducted Earle, and Southside Johnny inducted Moore. Jon Stewart hosted the show — which took place at Monmouth University’s 700-capacity Pollak Theatre — and Gov. Murphy and Archives executive director Bob Santelli gave speeches.
All the honorees performed one song, with backing by Van Zandt’s Disciples of Soul band, after giving their speeches. And all of them, plus Southside Johnny, then participated in an evening-ending five-song jam session.
Patti Scialfa had been scheduled to attend, as well, and induct Love. But like her husband Springsteen, she was unable to be there because she has COVID.
