Stevie Van Zandt made a surprise appearance at Jesse Malin’s benefit concert, tonight at The Beacon Theatre in New York, performing “Turn Up the Mains” — from Malin’s 2015 album New York Before the War — with him. You can watch of video of this number, below.
This was the first of two benefit concerts for and featuring Malin, at the Beacon. Malin performed with his band, and with various guests; the lineup included Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Adam Duritz and David Immerglück of Counting Crows, Jakob Dylan, Alejandro Escovedo, Rickie Lee Jones, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Butch Walker, Diane Gentile, Catherine Popper, Danny Clinch and others.
The second benefit will take place on Dec. 2, with scheduled performers including Williams, Duritz and Immerglück, Dylan, Jones, Walker, Willie Nile, The Hold Steady, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements, Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie, and Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello. Proceeds will go to Malin’s Sweet Relief fund, supporting him as he continues to recover from the spinal stroke he suffered last year.
