NJArts.net is excited to announce that the London-born recording artist and songwriter Teddy Thompson will open the NJArts.net benefit concert headlined by his father, masterful singer-songwriter and electrifying guitarist Richard Thompson, Jan. 14 at the Outpost in the Burbs in Montclair.

Tickets are on sale at outpost.ticketleap.com/richard-thompson-2023.

Though they will perform separate sets at this show, they have recorded and performed together in the past. Teddy (also the son of the stunning singer-songwriter Linda Thompson) played in his father’s band during the 1990s and has appeared on some of his albums, including Mock Tudor (1999) and the live album Celtschmerz (1998). Teddy also co-produced his mother’s 2002 album Fashionably Late.

Now living in New York, Teddy was influenced by Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and others, and has an understated voice that mixes genres, including country, rock, pop and folk.

“I’m a hybrid-genre person, which a lot of people find confusing,” he said in a 2011 interview with the New York Times. “I grew up listening to American country music and rock ’n’ roll made between 1955 and 1959. The Everly Brothers and Chuck Berry were my first musical loves and are still what I am most moved by. Roy Orbison came a little bit later.”

Jenni Muldaur and Teddy Thompson performed at Woodbridge High School in July 2022.

Along with Jenni Muldaur, Teddy Thompson presented an evening of classic country duets as part of this summer’s series of free concerts at Woodbridge High School. He will play solo at the NJArts.net fundraiser.

Richard Thompson plans to record an electric album in October. The January show will be acoustic, with his wife Zara Phillips singing harmony.

Phillips’ one-woman show “Somebody’s Daughter” (based on her book of the same name) will be presented by Outpost in the Burbs on Dec. 10; visit OutpostIntTheBurbs.org.
