Filip Pogády — a “new generation violin virtuoso,” in the words of New Jersey Festival Orchestra music director and conductor David Wroe — will join the orchestra at its two season-opening concerts, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Westfield, and Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Concert Hall at Drew University in Madison.
Pogády, a 31-year-old Slovakia native, will perform Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1. The program will also include George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Fantasy; and Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.
On Oct. 13, Michael Rosin will give a pre-concert lecture in the church’s Fellowship Room about the music being performed, at 6 p.m.
Pogády’s appearance was made possible through the support of the Slovak-American Cultural Center.
The Oct. 13 concert will be the orchestra’s first at First United Methodist Church. In a press release, Wroe said “The wood in this intimate space adds a dynamic rarely found in regular performing spaces and the sound bounces off the walls, becoming revitalized and blended.”
The NJFO season will also include:
• “Return of the Three Holiday Tenors,” featuring John Easterlin and Friends, Dec. 14 at the DeBaun Performing Arts Center at the Stevens Institute in Hoboken; Dec. 15 at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield; and Dec. 16 at St. Peter’s Church in Morristown.
• “Tosca” (The Joseph DeAlessandro Memorial Opera Concert), Feb. 23 at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield, Feb. 24 at the Concert Hall at Drew University in Madison.
• “Music That Makes Hollywood,” June 1 at First United Methodist Church, Westfield. Charlie Chaplin’s “The Immigrant” presented with live symphonic score by Carl Davis; Sibelius’ Violin Concerto; Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.

Wow fantastic program and talent. We’re so lucky to get that right in NJ!
We were introduced to NJ Festival Orchestra and were so imprerssed with the programs, the musicians, and with the enthusiasm and leadership of conductor/music director David Wrote.
Looking forward to another wonderful season at Drew University, Madison.
