Members of the Angel City Chorale perform “The Rising,” on “America’s Got Talent.”
On tonight’s edition of the TV competition series, “America’s Got Talent,” the Los Angeles-based Angel City Chorale performed a powerful version of Bruce Springsteen’s post-9/11 anthem, “The Rising.” It is, of course, the 17th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 today, and it just so happened that it’s a Tuesday, like it was on that day.
At the start of the number, choir members stood in darkness and held flashlights, to evoke first responders going into the darkness of the World Trade Center buildings. Interviewed on the NBC show, the choir’s artistic director, Sue Fink, called the performance “our tribute to all the first responders that put their lives on the line for people they don’t even know, regardless of race, belief, age.”
The four “America’s Got Talent” judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — all praised the choir’s rendition of The Boss’ song.
Tonight was the “performance” show in the second week of semifinals, and the results will be announced on tomorrow’s show. The Angel City Chorale is one of 16 acts still left in the competition. The Season Finale will be on Sept. 19.
